Hamad Bin Khalifa UniversityDr. Antonio Sanfilippo serves as Chief Scientist at Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI), where he leads the Energy Management Program developing innovative solutions for smart grids, solar resource assessment, and demand-side management. After earning his PhD from the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics and master's degrees from Columbia University, he built an impressive career spanning academia, government, and industry. From 2003 to 2014, he served as Chief Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he received the 2008 Laboratory Director's Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and led critical projects for multiple U.S. government agencies. His research portfolio includes groundbreaking work in solar monitoring networks, microgrid testbeds, and predictive analytics for energy systems. Prior positions include Research Director in the private sector, Senior Consultant at the European Commission, and Research Supervisor at SHARP Laboratories of Europe. Under his leadership, QEERI has established key capabilities including a network of solar monitoring stations and advanced microgrid facilities. His recent work focuses on PV adoption modeling, solar resource mapping, and smart home energy management systems, with significant publications in renewable energy integration and solar forecasting. In 2020, he was presented with the Qatar Innovation Leadership Award by the World Innovation Congress for his contributions to energy research and development.
