Pioneering Balinese Composer Advancing Contemporary Gamelan

Born in 1973 in Pengosekan village to a family of artists, he began his gamelan journey at age 11 under the guidance of his father Dewa Nyoman Sura and brother Dewa Putu Berata. After graduating from the Academy of Indonesian Performing Arts in Denpasar, he co-founded Çudamani in 1997, which quickly gained international recognition. His groundbreaking compositions, including "Geregel" (2000) and "Semara Wisaya" (performed at Carnegie Hall in 2004), have revolutionized contemporary gamelan music. As founder of Gamelan Salukat in 2007, he created new instruments with unique tuning systems to explore contemporary musical possibilities. His collaborative work spans cultures, from directing gamelan for the opera "A House in Bali" with Bang On a Can Allstars to creating works for MIT's Gamelan Electrika and various international ensembles. Through his teaching at institutions worldwide and innovative compositions, he continues to bridge traditional Balinese music with contemporary artistic expression.
