Tokyo Institute of TechnologyDavid B. Stewart is a distinguished scholar and Specially Appointed Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he has been teaching since 1976. He earned a B.A. Hon. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and a Ph.D. from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, in 1972, focusing on architect Le Corbusier. Stewart has contributed significantly to the field of architecture through his research and publications, including "The Making of a Modern Japanese Architecture: 1868 to the Present" and the monograph "Kazuo Shinohara, Centennial Hall, Tokyo." His expertise in modern Japanese architecture is further demonstrated through his involvement with the editorial staff of L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui in Paris. In addition to his teaching, he has developed a MOOC titled "Modern Japanese Architecture: From Meiji Restoration to Today," which explores the history and concepts behind modern architecture in Japan. Throughout his career, Stewart has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions worldwide and has played a vital role in advancing the understanding of architectural history and theory in both Japan and beyond.
