University of CanterburyDr. Darren Gravley has established himself as a prominent figure in Earth Sciences as an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury's School of Earth and Environment, where he combines his expertise in volcanology with innovative approaches to geoscience education. His research portfolio spans multiple countries including New Zealand, United States, Japan, Italy, and Brazil, focusing on supervolcanoes, geothermal systems, and Earth systems science. As Director and co-developer of Frontiers Abroad, he has created transformative field-based education programs that integrate geology, environmental sciences, and cultural knowledge, particularly benefiting American students studying in New Zealand. His significant contributions include leading the Mercury Energy funded 'Source to Surface Geothermal Research Programme' and conducting extensive research in the Taupō Volcanic Zone. Drawing from his New Zealand and American heritage, and early experiences in iconic geological locations like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, he has developed a unique perspective that enriches his teaching and research. With over 20 years of experience in Earth and Environmental Sciences, he has recently expanded his focus to include community engagement with local iwi and hapu, while also pioneering virtual online field learning experiences. His work as Principal Investigator has supported numerous graduate students studying magmatic heat sources, volatile transfer, and geothermal exploration, establishing him as a leading figure in both research and education within the field of Earth sciences.
