After studying medicine at RWTH Aachen University, Université de Lausanne, and Harvard Medical School, he completed two Ph.D.s - one in cognitive neuroscience from Research Center Juelich and another in computer science focusing on machine learning statistics at INRIA Saclay and Neurospin. His early career included heading the Social and Affective Neuroscience section at RWTH Aachen University's Department of Psychiatry, where his doctoral thesis on social processes in the human brain earned the Hans-Heimann prize from the German Society of Psychiatry
