Christopher Balme is a prominent figure in theatre studies, currently holding the chair at LMU Munich and serving as president of the International Federation for Theatre Research. Originally from New Zealand, he has been based in Germany since 1985 and previously held a similar position at the University of Amsterdam from 2004 to 2006. Balme is also the director of the Centre for Global Theatre History at LMU Munich. His research interests include cross-cultural reciprocity in theatre and performance, the interplay between theatre and media, and the relationship between theatre and the public sphere. His notable publications include Decolonizing the Stage: Theatrical Syncretism and Postcolonial Drama (1999), Pacific Performances: Theatricality and Cross-Cultural Encounter in the South Seas (2007), Cambridge Introduction to Theatre Studies (2008), and The Theatrical Public Sphere (2014).
