Chris Sangwin

Chris Sangwin is Professor of Technology Enhanced Science Education at the University of Edinburgh's School of Mathematics, where he leads research in mathematics education and automated assessment systems. His pioneering work includes creating STACK, an open-source assessment system that revolutionized online mathematics education by enabling sophisticated computer-aided assessment of mathematical expressions. Sangwin's career spans significant roles including a half-time secondment to the UK Higher Education Academy's Maths Stats and OR Network (2000-2011) and Senior Lecturer position at Loughborough University's Mathematics Education Centre (2013-2015). His contributions to education earned him a National Teaching Fellowship in 2006 and the 2023 IMA John Blake University Teaching Medal. Sangwin has authored influential books including "Computer Aided Assessment of Mathematics" and the popular science work "How Round is Your Circle," which explores the intersection of mathematics and engineering. His research interests encompass automatic assessment of mathematics using computer algebra, problem-solving pedagogies, and student-centered learning approaches.
