Davidson CollegeJoseph C. Ewoodzie Jr. serves as Associate Professor of Sociology and Vann Professor of Racial Justice at Davidson College. Born in Ghana's Central Region, he earned his BA from Ithaca College and his MS and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research examines how marginalized populations in urban environments navigate inequality, focusing on social boundaries and belonging. He has authored two significant books: "Break Beats in the Bronx: Revisiting Hip Hop's Early Years" (2017), which explores hip-hop's formative period using archival materials, and "Getting Something to Eat in Jackson" (2021), which investigates race and class through food practices in the urban South. His work combines qualitative methods with sociological theory to understand how communities create, maintain, and transform social boundaries. Beyond academia, he brings expertise in hip-hop's early history, teaching courses like "Hip-Hop and Urban Sociology" while contributing to public discourse on urban culture and racial justice.
