Delft University of TechnologyDr. Calvin Rans is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology and an Adjunct Professor at Carleton University. His research focuses on understanding failure mechanisms in lightweight aircraft materials and structures to enable damage tolerant design. Rans aims to develop structures that fail slowly and detectably, allowing for timely repairs before safety is compromised. Recently, his work has expanded into additive manufacturing (3D printing), exploring how to certify novel weight-optimized structures produced through this technology. Rans teaches courses on solid mechanics, composite materials, fatigue and damage tolerance, lightweight structures, forensic engineering, and joining methods at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He was named TU Delft Lecturer of the Year in 2018 and awarded "Teacher of the Year" for the Netherlands in 2019, recognized for his inspiring teaching and continuous efforts to improve his lectures. Through his research and teaching, Rans strives to advance aerospace structural design by bridging fundamental materials science with practical engineering applications
