Dr. Benjamín Ruiz Loyola serves as Full Professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry at UNAM's Faculty of Chemistry, where he has taught for over 44 years. Born in Mexico City in 1950, his academic credentials include a degree in Chemistry and Master's in Science specializing in Organic Chemistry from UNAM, complemented by a diploma in Scientific Journalism. His expertise spans hazardous materials and science communication, notably serving on the UN Commission for Monitoring, Verification and Inspection (UNMOVIC) of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in 2003. From 2016 to 2018, he was a member of the Advisory Committee on Education and Outreach of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. Through his Coursera course "Química, guerra y ética," which has enrolled over 12,000 students, he helps learners understand chemical weapons, their effects, and ethical implications. His contributions to science communication include authoring more than 100 articles, delivering over 200 lectures, and directing more than 55 professional theses.
