Ben Mertz

Ben Mertz serves as a Lecturer in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, where he focuses on freshman engineering education. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. As a member of the Freshman Engineering Education lecturer team, he designs and teaches foundational courses including Introduction to Engineering, Advanced Math Methods for Engineers, Thermofluids, and High Speed Aerodynamics. While his research background lies in aerodynamic flow control, his current scholarly interests focus on engineering education, particularly in areas such as implementing active learning in large classrooms, enhancing teamwork in both onsite and online environments, integrating entrepreneurial mindset into engineering curriculum, and promoting diversity in competition clubs. His work includes significant contributions to engineering education research, particularly in addressing challenges with teaming instruction and managing team dynamics
