This course examines the complex relationship between democracy and climate change action. It explores whether democratic systems have the capacity to effectively address the climate crisis and what innovations may be necessary to make democracy fit for this challenge. The course covers topics such as the fundamentals of democracy and climate change, reasons for democratic inaction, the allure of eco-authoritarianism, international political systems, the role of non-state actors and civil society, and the concept of "more-than-human democracy". Students will engage with researchers and experts from the University of Copenhagen, specializing in political theory, climate science, authoritarianism, international politics, and non-state actors. The course also features interviews with real-world actors involved in the climate debate. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge needed to participate in ongoing discussions about climate change and the role of democracies in addressing its many challenges.

Expert in Climate Change and Democracy at the University of Copenhagen

Lars Tønder is a Professor with special responsibilities in the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen, where he specializes in the intersection of climate change and democracy. His research emphasizes governance, citizen participation, civil society, and the inclusion of non-human entities in democratic processes. Previously, he focused on broader democratic theory topics such as political pluralism, social justice, tolerance, and free speech. Tønder directs two significant research projects: "Democratic Innovation in a Green Transition" and "Vital Politics: Rethinking Normativity in the Anthropocene," and he co-investigates a project titled "The Danish Model for Citizen Engagement in Renewable Energy." He serves on the advisory board of Denmark's National Climate Research Center and frequently advises local and national governments on engaging citizens as active participants in the green transition. His latest book, Power in the Anthropocene, is set to be published by Edinburgh University Press in 2025. Passionate about higher education, Professor Tønder currently holds the position of Head of Studies for both the BSc and MSc degrees in Political Science and Social Studies at the university.
