His research interests lie at the intersection of engineering and social science, focusing on human resilience and the dynamics of complex socio-technical systems that support community well-being, such as energy, water, transportation, and cybersecurity. He co-founded the Resilience Engineering Institute, dedicated to disseminating knowledge and tools related to resilience. Dr. Thomas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UC Santa Barbara, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, an MBA from Santa Clara University, and a Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering from Arizona State University.
