Baseball and Americanism

Dr. Tom Zeiler is a Professor of History at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he also serves as the Director of the International Affairs Program. He specializes in U.S. foreign relations, focusing on themes such as economics, globalization, war, and sports. Dr. Zeiler teaches a variety of courses in American and international history, including "Baseball and Americanism," "Moneyball and Globalization," and "Race, Gender, and Culture," which explore the intersection of historical events with cultural phenomena.Dr. Zeiler holds degrees from Emory University and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. He has authored or edited fourteen books on topics ranging from U.S. trade history to military history, including notable works like National Pastime: U.S. History Through Baseball and Ambassadors in Pinstripes: The Spalding World Baseball Tour and the Birth of the American Empire. His research interests extend to using trade as a diplomatic tool for peace and security, a project he refers to as “Capitalist Peace.”Recognized for his teaching excellence, Dr. Zeiler has received multiple awards, including the Teacher Recognition Award from the Student Organization for Alumni Relations. His contributions to the field have been supported by various grants and fellowships, including Fulbright fellowships for teaching and research. Through his engaging courses and extensive scholarship, he continues to influence students' understanding of history and its relevance to contemporary issues.
