This course offers a comprehensive exploration of mindfulness, combining academic inquiry with experiential learning. Led by Professor Chris Goto-Jones from Leiden University, the curriculum examines mindfulness from multiple perspectives, including psychology, philosophy, and politics. Students will explore popular conceptions and misconceptions about mindfulness, analyze its psychological and therapeutic applications, investigate its philosophical underpinnings, and consider its social and political implications. The course includes specially designed 'meditation labs' for hands-on practice and analysis. Recent updates have added modules on mindfulness in relation to trauma, social justice, nature, and land. Chris Goto-Jones is a distinguished academic educated at Cambridge, Keiō University in Tokyo, and Oxford University. He currently serves as the Dean of Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Victoria. Additionally, he holds the position of Professorial Research Fellow at SOAS, University of London, and is a guest professor in the Honours Academy at Leiden University. At Leiden, he has previously held roles as Professor of Comparative Philosophy & Political Thought, Professor of Modern Japan Studies, and founding Dean of Leiden University College in The Hague.
