Petra Sijpesteijn is a professor of Arabic, specializing in recovering the experiences of Muslims and non-Muslims living under Islamic rule by examining the under-used documents from the early Islamic world. Since 2017, she has managed an international research project titled "Embedding Conquest: Naturalising Muslim Rule in the Early Islamic Empire (600-1000)," funded by the European Research Council. She has also been the director of the Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam (LUCIS) since 2014.
