The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is a globally recognized standard and guide published by the Project Management Institute (PMI) that provides a framework of best practices, terminology, and guidelines for project management. It's important for software project management because it offers a structured approach to managing complex IT projects, provides a common language and methodology that facilitates communication among project stakeholders, establishes processes for planning, executing, and controlling projects effectively, and helps identify potential risks and challenges before they impact project success.

Software projects commonly fail due to inadequate requirements gathering and analysis, poor project planning and estimation, scope creep (continuous changes to requirements), ineffective communication among stakeholders, insufficient risk management, lack of user involvement throughout the development process, unrealistic deadlines or resource allocation, inadequate testing procedures, poor change management practices, and inexperienced project management. Understanding these failure points helps project managers implement preventive measures and increase success rates.

Communication skills significantly impact project management success by ensuring clear understanding of project goals and requirements among all stakeholders, facilitating effective coordination between team members, enabling timely identification and resolution of issues, building trust and maintaining team motivation, managing stakeholder expectations accurately, reducing conflicts and misunderstandings, improving decision-making through transparent information sharing, and enhancing overall project transparency. Verbal communication refers to the actual words and language used when communicating (what is said). Paraverbal communication involves how something is said—including tone of voice, pitch, volume, speed, and emphasis—conveying emotion and intent beyond the words themselves. Non-verbal communication encompasses body language, facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and physical appearance that often communicate messages unconsciously. Effective project managers understand and utilize all three forms to ensure their messages are received as intended and to accurately interpret communications from team members and stakeholders.
