Explore Spain's Golden Age through Cervantes' masterpiece, discovering the cultural splendor that elevated Spanish arts and letters to global excellence.

This immersive course takes you on a journey through Spain's Golden Age, using Cervantes' Don Quixote as a gateway to understanding this pivotal historical period. You'll explore the fascinating era when Spain created the first global empire in history and achieved remarkable cultural excellence between the 16th and 17th centuries. The course traces Spain's trajectory from hegemony to decline, from expansion to crisis, examining how this nation set Western cultural standards during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Spanish literary works like "La Celestina" and "El Lazarillo" were quickly translated in European and American printing presses, Spanish fashion became the courtly trend, and Spanish military and political treatises were studied even by enemies. Madrid, as the royal court, concentrated incredible talent (Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Velázquez), with similar cultural explosions in empire cities like Seville, Lisbon, Barcelona, Naples, Mexico City, and Lima—all united by loyalty to the Crown and Catholic faith. Throughout the course, you'll witness the transition from bell to clock timekeeping and from fantastic to real geography. You'll examine a society polarized between privileged nobility and clergy versus the poor and pícaros, explore Humanism in universities, and discover everyday life through family structures, food, housing, games, and festivities. The course reveals how the brilliant lights of literary and artistic geniuses shone despite the shadows of the Inquisition in this exceptional Golden Age culture.
