Tissue Biology

This course is part of Cell Physiology Professional Certificate.

This foundational course explores how cells work together to perform essential body functions. Building on cell physiology fundamentals, the course delves into specialized cells, particularly muscle cells and their contractile proteins. Students examine the complex neuromotor system governing muscle movement and coordination, including both conscious and unconscious control mechanisms. The course concludes with an investigation of sensory modalities and how we experience the world. Through expert videos and interactive assessments, students gain comprehensive understanding of cellular and tissue function.

Instructor

Leading Expert in Physiology Education and Endocrine Research

Dr. Stephen Anderson serves as Associate Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Queensland, where he combines expertise in endocrinology with innovative approaches to physiology education. After completing his PhD from the University of New England and Bachelor of Agriculture from the University of Sydney, he has established himself as an influential educator and researcher in physiological sciences. His work spans both endocrinology research, examining hormonal control of growth, metabolism, and reproduction, and educational innovation, focusing on metacognition and self-regulated learning. Through his role as Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Biomedical Sciences from 2019 to 2024, he has taught physiology to approximately 40,000 students across multiple disciplines including science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and allied health programs. His expertise particularly shines in making complex physiological concepts accessible to diverse student populations, demonstrated through his receipt of numerous teaching awards including an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation and being named Academic Leader of the Year in the UQ Faculty of Medicine in 2020. Currently holding Graduate Certificates in both Higher Education and Tertiary Education Management, he continues to advance physiological education while maintaining active research in hormonal regulation and student learning development. His recent work focuses on investigating how students develop capabilities during their undergraduate studies to support their future professional roles, while serving as scientific consultant for educational and documentary projects.
