Distinguished Scholar Advancing Bio-Inspired Engineering and Neuromorphic Systems

Bertram E. Shi is a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he has served since 1994. His academic journey includes BS and MS degrees from Stanford University and a PhD from UC Berkeley in Electrical Engineering. As Special Advisor to the Vice-President for Research and Development since 2023, Shi has demonstrated exceptional leadership through various roles, including Acting Dean of Engineering and Head of the ECE Department. His research spans neuromorphic engineering, computational neuroscience, and human-machine interfaces, with particular emphasis on facial expressions and eye movement analysis. Shi's contributions earned him IEEE Fellowship in 2001, making him one of the youngest elected fellows. He currently directs the HKUST Center for Aging Science and serves as Associate Director of the HKUST-HKSI Joint Institute on Sports Science and Technology. His work bridges technology and human behavior understanding, leading to collaborations across all four schools of the university. Beyond research, Shi has held visiting positions at MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, while actively serving the IEEE community as a Distinguished Lecturer and technical committee chair.

Shenghui Song is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Integrative Systems & Design and Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at HKUST, where he has served since 2009. His research spans wireless communications, machine learning with focus on distributed intelligence, integrated sensing and communication, and engineering education. Song's excellence in teaching has been widely recognized through multiple prestigious awards, including the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching (2018), Best Ten Lecturers (2017), the School of Engineering Distinguished Teaching Award (2012), and the Teachers I Like Award. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from City University of Hong Kong and has since made significant contributions to both research and education, particularly in areas such as federated learning, wireless communications, and innovative teaching methods. His work has been extensively published in leading journals, and he actively contributes to the academic community through his role as an educator and researcher, bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications in engineering education.
