Ottoman and Islamic Medical History Scholar

Dr. Miri Shefer-Mossensohn is a distinguished professor at Tel Aviv University, specializing in the social and cultural history of the pre-modern Islamic world. After graduating with honors from Tel Aviv University (B.A., Magna cum Laude, 1994, and Ph.D., 2001), she enhanced her expertise through fellowships at prestigious institutions including the Wellcome Library for the History of Medicine, Princeton University, and the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on social and cultural everyday realities of pre-modern Arabic and Turkish-speaking regions of the Middle East, with particular emphasis on medicine, health, and wellbeing in the Ottoman world. Her work has gained international recognition through her extensive research on the management and organization of medicine in the early modern Ottoman Empire, examining the evolution of medical standards and bureaucratic patterns. She has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching and continues to contribute significantly to the understanding of Islamic medical history and cultural development.
