She earned her Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from Purdue University under the guidance of Michael Forman. With over forty years of experience in academia, Dr. Novotny specializes in plant and animal sciences, genetics, and introductory, cell, and developmental biology. She has also contributed to standardized testing by writing question banks for the MCAT and GRE Advanced Exam in Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology.At Rice University, Dr. Novotny teaches several courses in immunology, including the "Fundamentals of Immunology" series, which covers topics such as innate immunity, inflammation, and the immune response to pathogens and cancer. She is a three-time recipient of the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching, reflecting her commitment to educational excellence. Her courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the immune system's functions and its implications for health and disease management
