Instructor
Professor and Chair of Civil Engineering at National Taiwan University
Professor Shang-Hsien Hsieh graduated from National Taiwan University (NTU) with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1985, later earning his Master's and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University in 1990 and 1993, respectively. After completing a two-year postdoctoral research at Purdue University, he returned to NTU to teach in the Department of Civil Engineering. Throughout his academic career, he has held various administrative roles, including Director of Extracurricular Activities, Deputy Chair of the Civil Engineering Department, and Vice Dean for International Affairs. Currently, he serves as the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department. Professor Hsieh's research focuses on the application of information technology in civil engineering, aiming to enhance students' capabilities in engineering construction and information application technologies. He has been actively involved in industry service and has contributed to various civil engineering associations. Notably, he served as the Chair of the Information Committee of the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering from 2008 to 2016, where he organized conferences on computer applications in civil engineering and initiated student competitions in 3D BIM design to promote education in BIM technology. Professor Hsieh is also an active member of international academic societies related to civil and architectural engineering computing, having held leadership positions within these organizations. Recognizing the importance of BIM technology for Taiwan's construction industry, he has advocated for its integration into educational programs at NTU and established the "Center for Engineering Information Simulation and Management" to advance BIM technology through industry-academia collaboration.
