This course is the third in a series introducing modern standard Chinese (Mandarin). It builds on previous levels to further develop language skills and cultural competence for successful interaction in Mandarin-speaking societies. Students will continue to master Mandarin pronunciation, including Pinyin romanization, and advance their reading and writing skills. The course focuses on practical conversations and scenarios relevant to professional and social settings in Chinese culture. Topics include health, social etiquette, geography, weather, and travel. The curriculum emphasizes the intricate relationship between language and culture, teaching students to communicate and behave in ways that Chinese natives find comfortable and appropriate. By the end of the course, participants are expected to demonstrate improved proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Chinese, along with a deeper understanding of Chinese interpersonal behavioral culture and thought patterns.

Haohsiang Liao serves as Senior Lecturer and Director of the Chinese Language Program at MIT, where he combines traditional teaching methods with digital innovation. After earning his PhD from Ohio State University, MPhil from Taiwan Normal University, and BA from National Tsing Hua University, he taught at Williams College and Harvard University before joining MIT.
