Module Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Pyramids of Giza and their surrounding archaeological complex. It covers the history and significance of the Giza Pyramids and cemeteries, exploring who built them and how they were constructed. Students will learn about the cultural and religious importance of the pyramids, tombs, and temples, as well as the role of hieroglyphic inscriptions found at the site. The course traces the history of archaeological exploration at Giza, from early expeditions to modern digital techniques. Participants will gain an appreciation for Egyptian art of the Old Kingdom (Pyramid Age) and understand how new technologies are allowing us to visualize and study these ancient monuments in innovative ways. The curriculum also looks ahead to future research and how our understanding of Giza might evolve.

Leading Egyptologist and Digital Archaeology Pioneer
Professor Peter Der Manuelian serves as the Barbara Bell Professor of Egyptology at Harvard University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Department of Anthropology. Since earning his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1990, he has established himself as a leading figure in modern Egyptology. As Director of the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Giza Project at Harvard, he has revolutionized the field through digital archaeology initiatives and 3D visualization of ancient Egyptian sites. His career includes significant roles as Giza Archives Project Director at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2000-2011) and teaching at Tufts University. His research spans ancient Egyptian history, archaeology, digital epigraphy, mortuary architecture, and Egyptian language and culture. His recent book "Walking Among Pharaohs" (2023) chronicles the life of George Reisner and the development of modern Egyptology. As director of the MA Program in Museum Studies at Harvard Extension School and the Arabic Diaries Project, he continues to bridge traditional archaeology with cutting-edge digital technologies while training the next generation of museum professionals and Egyptologists.
