This comprehensive course explores the evolving concept of victims and reparation within international human rights law. The curriculum is divided into two main sections. The first section examines the historical development of the legal category of "victim" in international law and its significance for contemporary rule of law. Students will analyze different perspectives on victimhood across various legal systems and contexts. The second section focuses on comprehensive reparation, analyzing concepts such as restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, satisfaction, and guarantees of non-repetition through conceptual and jurisprudential study. The course provides particular emphasis on comparing approaches to reparation in regional human rights protection systems, including the European and Inter-American Courts of Human Rights.

Juan Felipe Lozano Reyes is a lawyer with a Master’s in Philosophy from the Universidad del Rosario and a Master’s in Comparative Constitutional Law from the Central European University. He has been a professor at the Universidad del Rosario and has worked at the Bogotá Ombudsman's Office and the Constitutional Court of Colombia. His academic work focuses on freedom of expression and transitional justice, contributing to strategic litigation and human rights discussions. Currently, he serves as a specialized professional in the Amnesty or Pardon Chamber of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace.
