This comprehensive course examines Latin American history through the lens of material culture, focusing on artisanal, artistic, and design objects. Students will explore how everyday objects provide valuable insights into political, economic, and social developments within the region. The curriculum challenges traditional historical narratives by highlighting the importance of objects as sources of information. Through critical analysis of conception, materiality, use, appropriation, and conservation of objects, students will gain an understanding of significant historical moments in Latin America within a global context. The course addresses issues of gender, race, national and social group identities, consumerism, and environmental concerns through the study of material culture. By the end, students will have developed skills to identify materials, techniques, and styles specific to Latin America, while appreciating the value of material culture studies and questioning their own relationship with contemporary materialities.
