Imágenes digitales y género: análisis visual

This course is part of Género: Perspectiva participativa en ecología y vida digital.

This course explores how the digital ecosystem has transformed the value, circulation, and impact of images, prompting new research into modern communication processes. Students will analyze conceptual metaphors and stereotypes to understand how discursive hegemony functions across various social discourse theories, particularly focusing on hypermediation and contemporary visual culture. The curriculum examines the relationships between visual discourses and gender representation, emphasizing not only learning and teaching through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) but also studying their ability to influence social dynamics and the responsibility content creators bear. Participants will develop crucial digital skills including researching and curating information through case studies of gender equity collectives on social media, managing information by applying theories to create differential frameworks for digital content, and creating digital resources through design and communication strategies aligned with these frameworks.

There are 4 modules in this course

This course examines how digital images with gender contexts are created, circulated, and interpreted in contemporary social media environments. Beginning with an introduction to new forms of mediatization and the role of social networks as modern public forums, the curriculum explores digital activism and the transformation of public discourse in digital spaces. Students analyze the dematerialization of language and its reconstruction in virtual contexts, as well as the phenomenon of "clicktivism" and the hegemony of digital space. The course then delves into social and visual discourses, examining semiosis and discursive traces, discursive hegemony, and discursivity in hypermediatized society. A significant portion focuses on contemporary visual culture, the role of images in this landscape, the viralization of "poor" and subversive images, and the relationship between political action and new visual frameworks. The final modules address conceptual metaphors, their conditions, stereotyping in visual communication, the mandatory and normative character of stereotypes, and the development of differential frameworks that can transform gender stereotypes in digital imagery.
