Human Rights and Business

This module introduces the fundamental concepts of human rights and their relationship to business activities. Students will learn about what human rights are, the existing protection mechanisms designed to safeguard these rights, and examine the historical background and development of the business and human rights field. The module establishes the foundational knowledge necessary to understand how human rights principles apply in business contexts.

This module examines the key international frameworks and standards that govern business responsibilities regarding human rights. Students will study the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the International Labour Organization's Tripartite Declaration, OECD Guidelines for multinational enterprises, and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The module provides a comprehensive understanding of the global standards that businesses are expected to follow.

This module focuses on the concept and implementation of corporate due diligence in human rights matters. Students will learn about the process companies should follow to identify, prevent, mitigate, and account for how they address adverse human rights impacts. The module covers essential due diligence tools and examines good business practices through case studies of successful implementations.

This module examines the various mechanisms available for providing remedy when human rights violations occur in business contexts. Students will explore the concept of repair and the importance of effective remediation processes. The module covers both judicial mechanisms through courts and legal systems as well as extrajudicial mechanisms like grievance procedures, mediation, and other alternative dispute resolution approaches.

This module focuses on how international standards on business and human rights are implemented at the local level. Students will learn about national action plans for business and human rights, legislative developments across different jurisdictions, and a specific case study on Colombia's approach to implementing business and human rights frameworks. The module provides practical insights into how global principles are adapted to local contexts.
