Module Description
This comprehensive 5-week course focuses on expanding and consolidating knowledge of classical Greek through the historical context of the Persian Wars. Students will analyze and translate texts of medium difficulty while learning about this pivotal conflict between Greek city-states and the Persian Empire in the 5th century BC. The curriculum covers the four crucial battles that shaped European history: Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. Through these texts, students advance their understanding of Greek morphology, syntax, and vocabulary with special emphasis on military terminology. This course is part of the XSeries "Learn Classical Greek through Mythology, Philosophy and History" and builds upon foundational knowledge from previous modules.

Professor of Classical Philology, Researcher in Greek Linguistics & Literature
Raquel Fornieles Sánchez is a Professor of Classical Philology at UAM with degrees in Journalism and Classical Philology. She earned her doctorate in 2015 for her award-winning thesis on news transmission in Ancient Greek literature. Her research focuses on Greek Linguistics, Literature, and Teaching Innovation, incorporating active learning methodologies for classical languages. She has conducted research residencies at Heidelberg and Coimbra and has co-coordinated the "ESTRATEGISTS" project on Greek-Persian wars since 2017, which inspired this MOOC on intermediate-level Classical Greek.

Luz Conti is a Professor of Greek Philology at the Autonomous University of Madrid, accredited to the faculty, and Director of the Research Institute for Ancient Sciences at UAM since 2019. A recipient of extraordinary Bachelor's and Doctorate Awards and a Humboldt Fellow since 2007, she has built her career between Spain and Germany, specializing in the syntax and pragmatics of Ancient Greek. Since 2017, she has co-coordinated the "ESTRATEGISTS" project on Greek-Persian wars with Raquel Fornieles, which inspired this MOOC.
