This comprehensive course provides a thorough introduction to blockchain technology, its origins, functioning, and potential applications. Beginning with the historical context that led to blockchain's creation, including a brief history of money and the 2008 financial crisis, the curriculum explores the Cypherpunk movement and Bitcoin's emergence as the first implementation of blockchain technology. Students will learn the fundamental components of blockchain, including cryptography basics, distributed databases, and how blocks are chained together to create immutable records. The course delves into crypto assets, examining Bitcoin in detail (the network, software, and currency), mining and proof of work processes, and asymmetric cryptography with private and public keys. Other crypto assets are covered, including payment tokens, utility tokens, and blockchain-based securities, along with regulatory approaches across different countries. Advanced topics include consensus mechanisms, distributed ledger technologies beyond blockchain, smart contracts, decentralized applications (DApps), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), and the differences between public, private, and hybrid blockchains. The final module explores real-world applications of blockchain technology, complementary technologies like IoT, big data, and AI, and addresses the technological, human, and regulatory challenges facing blockchain adoption.
