Leading Expert in Environmental Technology and Sustainable Urban Development

Arjan van Timmeren serves as a Full Professor of Environmental Technology & Design at TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, while also acting as Principal Investigator at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). After earning his PhD with distinction from TU Delft in 2006 for his research on optimizing water, energy, and nutrient flows in the built environment, he has established himself as a leading authority in sustainable urban development. His research portfolio encompasses environmental technology, urban metabolism, circular economy, and sustainable area development. As Scientific Director of the Resilient Delta Initiative and Academic Portfolio Director for TU Delft's Sustainable Cities program, he leads numerous international projects focusing on intelligent cities, green-blue infrastructure, and climate adaptation. His work emphasizes the integration of sustainable technologies in urban environments, particularly in areas such as energy-neutral construction, electrical mobility, and resource flow management. Beyond his academic work, he maintains creative pursuits including painting, running, Pilates, and avant-gardening, while enjoying Mediterranean cuisine and wines in his spare time.

Leading Authority in Environmental and Water Technology

Huub Rijnaarts serves as Professor in Environment and Water Technology at Wageningen University's sub-department of Environmental Technology, while holding several prestigious positions including director of the Wageningen Institute for Environmental and Climate Research (WIMEK) and board memberships at both Deltares and the Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). After earning his PhD in 1994 from Wageningen University with research on microbial adhesion and biodegradation of halogenated compounds in groundwater and soils, he has established himself as a leading expert in environmental technology and water management. His research portfolio encompasses various critical areas including water technology, resource recovery, and urban resilience, with particular focus on circular approaches for water, waste, and energy in urban and agro-industrial systems. He leads multiple innovative projects, including the NWO programs Water Nexus and Entire, and has established living labs across the Netherlands, Europe, and China. His work addresses complex challenges in redesigning urban and industrial systems while considering human and environmental health impacts. Beyond his academic pursuits, he maintains an active lifestyle, enjoying sailing and playing guitar in his spare time.
