Instructor
Distinguished Environmental Scientist and Educator at Dartmouth College
Andrew Friedland is a prominent environmental and forest ecosystem scientist, serving as the Richard and Jane Pearl Professor of Environmental Studies, Emeritus, at Dartmouth College. With over 35 years of research experience, he has focused on the effects of air pollution on high-elevation forests in New England and New York, investigating the cycling of critical elements such as carbon, nitrogen, calcium, and lead as they traverse from the atmosphere through vegetation and soils into waterways. His work also addresses the implications of biomass removal on forest ecosystems. Dr. Friedland teaches courses on energy, introductory environmental science, and forest biogeochemistry, and he is the lead author of an influential introductory environmental science textbook as well as a guide on grant proposal development. His extensive research contributions include approximately 80 peer-reviewed publications and significant involvement in educational initiatives such as the Advanced Placement Environmental Science program. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Dr. Friedland's commitment to understanding and addressing environmental challenges underscores his role as a leader in the field of environmental studies.
