Instructor
Innovative Animator and Storyteller
Fran Krause, originally from Utica, New York, is a distinguished faculty member in the Character Animation Department at CalArts. After obtaining his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, he moved to New York City, where he honed his skills as an animator and story artist on notable projects such as Blue’s Clues, Superjail, Little Einsteins, and Saturday Night Live. His acclaimed short film, Mister Smile, garnered attention at over fifty film festivals, winning prestigious awards at events like the Ottawa Animation Festival. In addition to directing and co-creating pilots for Cartoon Network, including Utica Cartoon and Upstate Four, Fran has contributed to projects with Buck Studios and worked on storyboards for Over the Garden Wall. He earned his MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College in 2014 and is also known for his popular comic series, Deep Dark Fears, published in book form by Ten Speed Press in 2015.
