Distinguished Scholar of Early Modern Literature and Cultural History
Ian Frederick Moulton serves as President's Professor of English and Cultural History in ASU's College of Integrative Sciences and Arts. Born in London and raised in Winnipeg, he completed his doctorate in English from Columbia University before joining Arizona State University in 1995. His research focuses on gender and sexuality in early modern literature, with his works receiving recognition in prestigious publications including the New Yorker, LA Times, and Times Literary Supplement. He has authored significant books including "Before Pornography: Erotic Writing in Early Modern England" and "Love in Print in the Sixteenth Century: The Popularization of Romance." His scholarly contributions extend to works on Shakespeare, Pietro Aretino, Thomas Nashe, Montaigne, and Rabelais, as well as the history of reading and manuscript-print culture interactions. Beyond his research, he actively engages in public education through lectures and outreach programs, including teaching courses at ASU's Osher Life-Long Learning Institute and leading discussions on topics ranging from Shakespeare to film studies
